Using a Kallax as an aquarium stand - does it work?
Opinions on this question are widely divided.
The fact is, a Kallax shelf can be used well for an aquarium if a few small details are taken into account.
Note: Ikea itself does not classify the shelf as "suitable as an aquarium stand".
Use is always at your own risk.
Take a good look at your Kallax before using it. Is it intact everywhere? Was everything assembled correctly?
If that is the case and your choice is set, you can get started.
Well, almost; I would like to give you a few tips on how I proceed and what I look out for.
All edges and joints should be thinly sealed with aquarium silicone – especially the top surface, the inner edges of the compartments, and the base area – so that splash water or condensation cannot penetrate the interior.
Give your Kallax feet! If something overflows and collects under the Kallax, this is quickly the end for the shelf. Water damage is then inevitable, and the stability is no longer guaranteed.
With simple furniture feet, you play it safe so that no water can collect under the shelf. During maintenance work on the aquarium, especially when changing water, be careful with splash water. Always wipe it away immediately if something goes wrong.
It is highly recommended to use a continuous top panel (ideally 18–21 mm multiplex, glued wood, etc.) which distributes the load evenly and protects the original surface from water.
For tip-over safety and additional torsional rigidity, you should ideally screw the Kallax to the wall; alternatively, you can connect it laterally to adjacent Kallax shelves so that they brace each other.
With these simple measures, the furniture remains dry and dimensionally stable, and your aquarium stands securely.
